Jews in the West and the West in Jews

Books and Art offers online a place for viewers who have an intense interest in the early West, Jewish and otherwise. Research trips with my late husband, Fred Rochlin, when we were working on our book Pioneer Jews: A New Life in the Far West, set the mood. I can't recreate the hours we spent in eager exchanges with booksellers, university and historical society archivists, as well as pioneers and their descendants, often followed by tacos at a village Dairy Queen, matzo ball soup at a kitchen table, or salmon at a seaside grill. What I can offer are the books and art we created of materials gathered and ambience absorbed. We also feature spare copies of rare items which have been invaluable to me in my research throughout the years, as well as  the works of pioneer authors who depicted the Jewish West memorably and movingly unmasked, and bid us to do the same.
